Collegiate School music/history/culture tour, April 2024

In April 2024, students from Collegiate School embarked on an enriching tour of the Pays d’Auge region in Normandy, blending music, history, and cultural exploration into a memorable five-day experience. This tour, spanning from the 2nd to the 6th of April, was a unique opportunity for the students to immerse themselves in French culture while showcasing their musical talents in historic venues.

Day 1: Journey to Normandy

The trip began early on the 2nd of April, as students boarded coaches from Collegiate School in Bristol and headed to Newhaven for the ferry crossing to Dieppe. After a scenic four-hour journey across the English Channel, the group arrived in Dieppe and continued to their accommodation at Domaine Des Les Hellandes in Normandy. The evening was highlighted by a traditional ‘Dîner Normande,’ where the students savored local delicacies such as Escargots de Bourgogne and Pâté Normand à l’ancienne, accompanied by Jus de pomme.

Day 2: Market Day and Music at the Basilica

On the 3rd of April, the students explored the charming town of Honfleur, famous for its picturesque harbor and vibrant market. The Wednesday market in Honfleur, offering a variety of fresh produce, provided a perfect setting for the students to practice their French language skills while immersing themselves in the local culture.

Later in the day, the music group traveled to the Basilica of Saint Thérèse in Lisieux for a rehearsal in the crypt, followed by a concert performance. This atmospheric venue, steeped in history and spiritual significance, offered the students a unique backdrop for their musical talents. The concert, open to the public and attended by their peers, was a profound experience for the young musicians.

The Year 8 group, meanwhile, enjoyed a guided tour of the Basilica, learning about its history as one of the most visited religious sites in France. Both groups later visited the E. Graindorge Fromagerie in Livarot, where they learned about and tasted some of Normandy’s most famous cheeses.

The day concluded with a visit to Château Guillaume-le-Conquérant in Falaise, where the students explored the historic castle using augmented reality technology, bringing the past to life in an interactive and engaging way.

Day 3: A Magical Day at Disneyland Paris

On the 4th of April, the students set off early for a full day of excitement at Disneyland Paris. From thrilling rides to enchanting shows, the magic of Disney captivated the students, providing a day of fun and adventure. With lunch and dinner vouchers included, the day was filled with unforgettable moments as the students explored the various attractions of the park. After a long day of excitement, the group returned to their accommodation in Normandy.

Day 4: Historical Exploration and a Grand Concert

The final full day of the tour, April 5th, began with a visit to the famous Deauville Beach, where the students walked along the iconic ‘Planches’ boardwalk. The group then traveled to Bayeux to visit the Tapestry Museum, where they viewed the legendary Bayeux Tapestry, a stunning piece of medieval art that tells the story of the Norman Conquest.

After lunch in the gardens of Bayeux Cathedral, the group continued to Arromanches to experience the Arromanches 360° cinema, offering a panoramic view of the D-Day landings through immersive footage.

The day’s activities culminated in a grand concert at Château Canon, where the Collegiate School musicians performed alongside young French musicians. This collaborative event, featuring a mix of musical and ballet performances, was a highlight of the trip. The evening ended with a festive pizza party, bringing together the English and French students for a final celebration of their shared experiences.

Day 5: Farewell to Normandy

The tour concluded on the 6th of April, as the students packed up and began their journey back to Bristol. After a final breakfast and a scenic drive to Dieppe, the group boarded the ferry for their return to the UK, bringing with them a wealth of memories and new friendships forged during their time in Normandy.

“Thank you very much for all your work both before and during our trip to Normandy. We had a wonderful time. The combination of music/French/history worked very well and ensured all pupils were kept extremely busy and have gained some wonderful memories.”
