Reddiford Prep School French Trip, April 2024

In April 2024, the students of Reddiford Prep School embarked on an educational and culturally rich tour of the Pays d’Auge region in Normandy. Spanning from the 12th to the 15th of April, this tour was filled with historical exploration, immersive activities, and unforgettable experiences that brought the rich heritage of Normandy to life for the young students.

Day 1: Arrival and Introduction to Normandy

The journey began early on the 12th of April, with the students departing from Reddiford Prep School in Pinner, London. After a scenic coach ride to Dover, followed by a ferry crossing to Calais, the group made a stop in the picturesque town of Honfleur. Known for its charming harbor and artistic heritage, Honfleur provided the perfect introduction to the beauty of Normandy. The students then continued to their accommodation at Château le Kinnor in Livarot-Pays-d’Auge, where they were warmly welcomed with a presentation and a tour of the facilities. The evening concluded with a social dinner, setting the tone for the days ahead.

Day 2: Market Day and Cultural Immersion

The 13th of April began with a visit to the bustling market in Lisieux, a vibrant and extensive market that fills the town center every Saturday. The students explored the stalls, practicing their French language skills while discovering local produce and goods. This was followed by a guided tour of the Basilica of Saint Thérèse, a monumental site that left the students in awe of its grandeur and historical significance. They even ventured to the top of the dome, where breathtaking views awaited.

In the afternoon, the students visited the E. Graindorge Fromagerie in Livarot. Here, they participated in a hands-on workshop, learning about the traditional art of cheese-making, and sampled some of Normandy’s most famous cheeses. The day ended with a special performance evening back at Château le Kinnor, where students from the Lisieux Conservatoire showcased their musical talents.

Day 3: A Journey Through History

On the 14th of April, the focus shifted to the rich medieval and wartime history of Normandy. The day began with a visit to Château Guillaume-le-Conquérant in Falaise, the birthplace of William the Conqueror. The students used augmented reality tablets to explore the castle, gaining insights into the life and legacy of one of history’s most famous figures.

The afternoon was spent at Arromanches, where the students visited the Arromanches 360° Circular Cinema. This immersive experience provided a powerful visual history of the D-Day landings, followed by an exploration of the remnants of the artificial harbor on the beach—an essential part of World War II history. The day was both educational and moving, giving the students a deeper understanding of the historical significance of Normandy.

Day 4: A Farewell to Normandy

The final day of the tour, April 15th, began with an early breakfast before the group set off for Le Touquet, a popular seaside town known for its long sandy beach. The students enjoyed some time on the beach and an early picnic lunch, taking in the fresh sea air before beginning their journey home. The tour concluded with a return ferry crossing from Calais to Dover, and the students arrived back at Reddiford Prep School in the evening, their minds filled with new knowledge and memories of their French adventure.
