Avon House Prep School French Trip, May 2024
In May 2024, through our friends at tour operator Club Europe, students from Avon House School embarked on a three-night educational tour of the Pays d’Auge region in Normandy. This trip, from the 14th to the 17th of May, offered a unique blend of hands-on learning experiences, cultural immersion, and historical exploration, making it an enriching journey for the young students.
Day 1: Arrival and Welcome
The tour began on the evening of the 14th of May, with the students arriving at their accommodation in Normandy. After settling in, they were greeted with a welcome presentation and a tour of the facilities, setting the tone for the exciting days ahead. The evening concluded with a group dinner, providing the students with their first taste of Normandy’s culinary delights.
Day 2: Cheese-Making and Castles
The 15th of May was dedicated to exploring Normandy’s rich agricultural and medieval heritage. After an early breakfast, the students traveled to Livarot to visit Le Village Fromager. Here, they participated in a guided tour and cheese-making workshop at the famous Graindorge factory. The students learned about the traditional processes involved in making some of Normandy’s most celebrated cheeses, with the opportunity to try their hand at cheese-making and enjoy some tastings.
Following the workshop, the group traveled to Château Guillaume-le-Conquérant in Falaise. They enjoyed a picnic lunch on the castle grounds before embarking on a guided tour of the historic site. Equipped with hand-held tablets featuring augmented reality technology, the students explored the castle and its rich history, bringing the past to life in an engaging and interactive way.
Day 3: History and Chocolate in Bayeux
On the 16th of May, the focus shifted to the historical and cultural treasures of Bayeux. The day began with a visit to the Bayeux Tapestry Museum, where the students had free time to explore this famous artifact that depicts the events leading up to the Norman Conquest of England. The museum visit was followed by a relaxing picnic in the gardens of Bayeux Cathedral, with a brief visit to the cathedral itself.
The afternoon offered a sweet treat as the students headed to the Drakkar Chocolate Museum. Here, they participated in a chocolate workshop, learning about the art of chocolate-making while indulging in some delicious tastings. This hands-on experience was both educational and enjoyable, providing a fun end to a day steeped in history and culture.
The evening concluded with a special ‘Dîner Normande,’ a three-course meal showcasing the best of local produce, accompanied by traditional Normandy apple and pear juices.
Day 4: Farewell to Normandy
The tour came to a close on the 17th of May, as the students prepared for their return journey to the UK. After a final breakfast, they packed up and set off, carrying with them a wealth of new knowledge and cherished memories from their Normandy adventure.
