Joyce Frankland Academy and Collège Andre Maurois (Deauville), June 2024

In June, students from Joyce Frankland Academy embarked on an exciting four-night tour to Pays d’Auge, Normandy. The trip began on Monday, 17th June, as the group departed from Saffron Walden and traveled to Dover for a ferry crossing to Calais. After a long but scenic journey through France, they arrived at their accommodation, Foyer Louis et Zélie Martin in Lisieux, where they were greeted with a welcome presentation and dinner.

Tuesday saw the students engage in cultural exchange with a visit to Collège André Maurois in Deauville. They spent the morning participating in language activities with French students, followed by lunch at the school canteen. In the afternoon, the group toured the Graindorge Fromagerie, where they learned about cheese-making through hands-on workshops and tastings, offering a unique glimpse into this iconic French craft.

On Wednesday, the students explored the historic Chateau Guillaume le Conquerant in Falaise, delving into Normandy’s medieval history with a guided tour of the castle. After enjoying their packed lunches, they spent the afternoon in central Lisieux, shopping and soaking in the local atmosphere. The day ended with a guided tour of the Basilica of Saint Therese, where students marveled at the impressive architecture and panoramic views from the top of the dome.

Thursday was a full day at Collège André Maurois, allowing for further interaction and cultural immersion with French students. The day provided ample opportunity for Joyce Frankland students to practice their French and deepen their understanding of French school life, before returning to Lisieux for dinner.

Friday marked the end of the tour, with the group packing up and beginning their return journey to the UK. After a ferry ride from Dunkirk to Dover, they arrived back at Joyce Frankland Academy in the evening, bringing an enriching and educational tour to a close.
